Aerodynamic First Responder Hybrid Motorcycle
White Motorcycle Concept’s Aerodynamic First Responder Hybrid Motorcycle project builds upon a previous successful proof of concept research project to improve aerodynamic efficiency to help accelerate the introduction of electric motorcycles.
Project Overview
The aim of the project was to develop manufacturing techniques for low pilot production of the first response vehicle. Within the project, the duct was engineered into the scooter to achieve a 20% aerodynamic gain and all vehicle documentation was completed ready for the vehicle to enter pilot production.
Technology
By positioning the duct through the centre of the motorcycle, redesigning the front wheel fenders, and modifying the rear of the vehicle so the paniers were pulled into the front envelope, the project was able to achieve a 25% aerodynamic benefit. In addition to this, the electric drive for the hybrid system was developed using a modified off-the-shelf motor from a lawn mower application and a system to drive the crank on the back wheel was designed. A significant outcome for the project was the ability to develop manufacturing techniques to meet the required price point and to reduce the bill of materials costs.
Primary route to market
White Motorcycle Concepts have worked directly with Northamptonshire Police who will roll out the first pilot fleet of vehicles. Engaging with the police and working directly with the end customer has been essential to the project success, enabling the consortia to develop a product which the customer wants and needs. The pilot opportunity with Northamptonshire Police will allow White Motorcycle Concepts to demonstrate the product out in the market and working to police forces across the country, developing confidence in the motorcycle with further potential customers.
Next steps and opportunities
The pilot fleet of 8 vehicles with Northamptonshire police rolled out in September 2022 and it is anticipated that more vehicles will follow. Following the pilot fleet roll out, White Motorcycle Concepts aim to begin full production. Further engineering work will be required by partners EY3 once the pilot vehicles are in use. In the long-term, White Motorcycle Concepts aim to focus on concept development and manufacturing of circa 100 units per year, with partners Productiv enabling manufacturing scale up by becoming the production partner.
Importance of NVN funding
Securing funding from the NVN and APC has enabled White Motorcycle Concepts to develop a pre-production vehicle which is documented and manufactured in the right way whilst hitting an appropriate price point.
The learning from partaking in NVN funded proof-of-concept project which led to a production readiness project, as well as further feasibility studies, has been significant. The expertise and support provided by the NVN, along with its wider network and community, has enabled the project to be propelled. Without this support and community, organisations such as White Motorcycles Concepts would not be able to achieve such projects.
