Project Overview:

The focus was on developing a higher power version of Intra Drive’s drive unit, tailored to suit EAV’s requirements. The project aimed to establish the feasibility of this innovative concept by designing and manufacturing a working demonstrator prototype drive unit, installed in a bespoke EAV vehicle.

Technology Developed

The resultant transaxle unit features an integrated differential, which simplifies assembly into the chassis, and negates the need of a heavily loaded chain. The unit features 8 gear ratios to support optimum operation across a range of duty cycles, load conditions and terrain. The final unit weighs 8 kgs.

Significant project outcomes

Following completion of the project, the prototype has been on extended test in Edinburgh. The project has demonstrated that the transaxle can significantly improve the operational performance of the EAV product.

Commercial Opportunities

With the increasing demand and interest for alternative last mile delivery vehicles, the transaxle developed during this project not only has a future application with EAV but also with other OEMs. The project has also identified the potential for an increased level of UK sourcing, as well as technology transfer into the e-bike market.

Importance of NVN funding

NVN feasibility funding enabled collaboration between two UK companies at the cutting edge of ultra-low carbon e-mobility transport technologies, as well as the building of a UK supply chain.
